According to a new report, the next Xbox console is expected to be unveiled this year. Sure, it won’t be the next proper Xbox console, but it also looks like it won’t be a simple overhaul of the current Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S either. The report comes through the path of prominent Xbox insider and leaker Nick Baker. During a recent episode of the The Xbox era podcast, Baker shared that he’s heard that Xbox is gearing up to show off some new hardware this year. Speaking of this mysterious hardware, Baker teases that it’s something Xbox fans won’t see coming.
“All I’ve been told that I’m allowed to say is that this year – or I should say maybe this year because there’s a lot of things that are holding things up lately, whether it’s the situation in Ukraine, COVID issues, chip shortages, all that kind of stuff… so I’m not going to say it’s definitely going to happen this year – but I’ve been told it should be this year .
Baker went on to reinforce the “should be this year” part of the statement, which is an important thing to point out because things are always subject to change. Baker then concluded the tease with the juicy part: “Xbox currently has some material to show…that falls into a different bucket than people are probably expecting.”
There are two important things here. First, Xbox has new material to show and it could be shown this year. Second, it’s not what people expect, which probably rules out a hardware overhaul like the Xbox One with the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Those kind of overhauls will inevitably happen, but it doesn’t seem like it either what Baker is. teasing. So what the hell was he teasing? We do not know. Many won’t hesitate to take the plunge and suggest it’s something with VR, especially with the upcoming PlayStation VR 2, but that conclusion ignores the fact that Xbox boss Phil Spencer has some hesitation. a long time in the VR space.
Unfortunately, for now, all we can do is speculate. In the meantime, take everything here with a grain of salt. Baker is a reliable and reputable source, but he’s been off the mark in the past. And of course, as Baker himself says, everything here is subject to change. The claim might be right now, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way, which is always the danger of sharing inside information early.
