The Wii and Nintendo DSi stores have been closed for days, what’s going on?

The Nintendo Wii Shop (Wii Shop Channel) and Nintendo DSi Shop have been completely offline for days. Internal digital stores for Wii and the Nintendo DSi family of consoles (DSi and DSi XL) have not allowed their users to access their respective purchase portals since March 16 at around 10:00 p.m. (CST), but Nintendo n did not explain the reason behind this maintenance period.

Errors 290502 and 209601. Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop, offline

Although the Wii Shop Channel permanently ceased purchases on January 31, 2019, players can still download previously purchased games or applications. The same goes for the Nintendo DSi Digital Store, which shut down on March 31, 2017, only allowing downloads of previously purchased DSiWare programs. The problem is that, if the servers are not active, it is not even possible to redownload already purchased content.

At the moment, errors 290502 and 209601 are the ones that appear in the Wii and Nintendo DSi stores respectively. GameXplain released a video where they explain that it’s not just a problem accessing via US servers, but also European players don’t see these messages and can’t re-download previously purchased software .

However, we have no further information at this time. It is not known if this is a temporary maintenance period or a total shutdown of these two digital stores.

Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops will close permanently in 2023

This news comes shortly after Nintendo announced that Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop digital stores would close in March 2023. It will still be possible to download previously purchased games and software, but transactions will officially cease.

The debate about preserving video games and how companies can help provide alternative legal access to these defunct video games continues to be hot.
